Behind The Design: Abu Dhabi Race Poster

Behind The Design: Abu Dhabi 2025

As the season draws to a close, and the team heads to Abu Dhabi for the final race of the year, we sit down for one final Behind The Design with Sean Bull, Senior Visual Designer at BWT Alpine Formula One Team; as he breaks down the final poster of the season.

What emotion or energy did you want to capture from this particular Grand Prix?

With this design I wanted to celebrate the end of the season with a sunset theme around the hotel complex of the Yas Marian Circuit, taking a lot of reference images from our photo library and picking the scene I wanted to re-create with the photographic render style I’ve adopted for a few of my poster this season was key: I initially went to explore and overhead shot with the camera reaching through the mesh of the hotel to create a strong sense of depth using foreground elements but upon setting the cars on the track, I just couldn’t find any angle that felt dynamic enough for a poster, so settled on a wide angled low down approach that encompassed both cars.

The lighting from the hotel and the sunset created some dynamic mixes and strong contrasts that took a whilst to balance with the camera settings and exposure times, this was particularly tough to get a good result that mixed the exposure needed for the sunset scene, and then not to blow out the highlights from the floodlights and the hotel lighting, so a lot of trial and error took place to get the results I wanted here.

How do you know when a design is “done”?

With this design, a lot of post-production went into the final look, with about five different renders of various lighting blended and comped to create the final look, with multiple edits, brush works and RAW editing on the final visual to better balance the colours, sensation of speed and visual impact.

Some adjustments and re-rendering was also needed when making the visuals wide enough to fit and adjust to all the various sizes we output, always a tough balancing act but overall I’m extremely happy with the posters I’ve worked on this season and the themes we.ve all created as a team on the 2025 Poster selection.
