Behind The Design: The Netherlands

With an iconic fan energy in the dunes, and a sea of orange Dutch sporting the national colours, this week's race poster is immediately relatable to the Zandvoort.

With the mandated summer shutdown over, the A525 heads to the sands of Zandvoort, in the Netherlands for another trip around the legendary track. To create a masterpiece that captures this moment, Lucas Ulitschnik (Graphics Designer at BWT Alpine Formula One Team) takes us through how he did this.

What was the initial spark or idea behind this poster?

When you think of Zandvoort, you can’t help but think of the passionate racing fans who attend in force over the grand prix weekend. This, coupled with a bit of love for a retro kit design, inspired me to create this poster.

Can you walk us through your design process from concept to final piece?

I started by recreating the banking, this involved a lot of referencing to make sure that everything looked realistic.

After creating the banking, it was all about the barriers and curbs, and setting them up to complete the scene. Once all the objects were in place, I began texturing the scene. I created a bespoke pattern inspired by a famous Dutch football kit, mixed with some Alpine flair using elements from our brand identity. I applied this pattern to the barriers and background and then worked on the rest of the scene to create layered textures with the bold orange. Lighting then became my main focus, using a Redshift sun and sky to highlight the car and scene. This can sometimes be the longest part of the design because you must think about shadow direction, which parts you want highlighted, and realism. For the final touch, I added in some subtle pyro as if it were the last tour of the circuit. I have been to Zandvoort for a race weekend and this was one of my favourite moments to experience.
