Over the decades, the United States Grand Prix visited a variety of race tracks and downtown city centres before a permanent home was established in Texas. The newly constructed Circuit of the Americas hosted its first F1 race in 2012 and has since become a favourite stop on the calendar, even with new U.S. races arriving in Miami and Las Vegas. COTA is the venue for Round 19 of this year’s World Championship and is located just a short drive from the vibrant city of Austin.
The state of Texas has a unique identity, thanks to its size and storied past. The Bullock Texas State History Museum is an excellent place to explore the fascinating story of the Lone Star State. From the turbulent conflict with Mexico (the famous Alamo is in nearby San Antonio) - via the discovery of oil - to learning about the moon landings, this exhibition covers it all.
From the moment you touch down in Austin, you’ll know this city loves music. The huge replica electric guitars in the airport baggage hall are your first clue. Austin proudly embraces two slogans: “Keep Austin weird” and “The Live Music Capital of the World.” Live music is everywhere, with musicians performing at festivals, in bars and coffeehouses, and even outside grocery stores. Whatever your vibe, you’ll find a soundtrack for it here.
Ribs, brisket, pulled pork - in this part of Texas, slow-cooked barbecue is king. Whether you prefer your comfort food served up the old-fashioned way or with a modern twist, you’ll find plenty of sizzling hot spots to try. Head to South Congress Avenue, a street lined with excellent restaurants. By day, it’s also a great place to go shopping - perfect for picking up a pair of cowboy boots or a ten-gallon Stetson.
If you want to escape the bustle of downtown, Austin has numerous scenic trails through lush parks and along peaceful lakes. One of the easiest to reach is Barton Creek, which starts at Zilker Park. This is also home to Barton Springs Pool, a three-acre pool fed by natural underground springs that keeps the water at a refreshing 20°C year-round. A little further along the Colorado River lies Lady Bird Lake, a favourite spot for kayaking, paddleboarding or cycling around the shoreline.
This historic national landmark is the seat of government for Texas and bears a striking resemblance to the U.S. Capitol building in Washington. With its impressive dome, it was once was billed as the “seventh largest in the world” when it was completed in the 1880s. Surrounded by grand grounds, the Texas State Capitol is considered one of the most distinguished in the nation, so be sure to take a guided tour before heading back to the action at COTA
