Seventy-five years ago, the first-ever round of the newly-created World Championship for Drivers took place at Silverstone. May 1950 was a royal occasion, with the King and Queen in attendance to witness the first official Formula One event. Situated on the site of RAF Silverstone, the former airfield has evolved into one of the fastest circuits on the calendar. The British Grand Prix is a significant one for BWT Alpine Formula One Team, as it’s our home race. If you’re heading up to support us - here are some other ideas for you to enjoy this weekend.
Located on a high, windswept plateau, the farmland at Silverstone was requisitioned by the military during World War II and transformed into an airfield — which explains track names like Hangar Straight and Wellington Straight (named after the bomber). You can discover the circuit’s fascinating past at the Silverstone Museum near the main entrance. The museum also houses a rich display of racing machines and memorabilia, recounting some of the greatest races held here.
Before arriving at Silverstone, make time to catch the long-awaited summer blockbuster — F1: The Movie. With cinemas in Northampton, Bicester, Oxford and Milton Keynes, you can watch Brad Pitt star as veteran racer Sonny Hayes, who gets a second chance at an F1 seat from his old friend, APXGP team owner Ruben Cervantes (played by Javier Bardem). Produced by Apple and directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), Pierre Gasly raved about it: “The production did a fantastic job. I don’t want to give too much away, but I definitely hope that people are going to enjoy it.”
If you’re after a bit more culture, consider adding a trip to the delightful town of Stratford-upon-Avon, which is around 40 miles from Silverstone. You can visit the home and birthplace of playwright William Shakespeare, and even catch one of his plays at the famous RSC Theatre, located on the banks of the River Avon.
On the Saturday of the British Grand Prix, members of the team - and fans - will be taking part in the first-ever Formula One Run Club for fans! Hosted by Team Supplier MISSION, the British GP Run Club will take place in London on Saturday 5th July and will take in a swathe of London landmarks ahead of FP3. Runners will get a free BWT Alpine Formula One Team shirt and hang out together for a team-led watch-along of the practice session in Silverstone. There are a couple of decent public houses in the vicinity of Silverstone, many of which boast racing heritage. On the A43 heading east, you’ll find the Green Man. On the walls of the inn are historic racing photos paying tribute to drivers who stayed there in the 1960s, including Graham Hill and Jim Clark. During testing, they would often pop into the Royal Oak in Silverstone village at lunchtime too. You can also head over to our friend Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, The Farmer’s Dog, near Burford and sample his Hawkstone Brewery ale.
