Head to the hills

The mountains around Knittelfeld offer some spectacular views and are well worth a hike or cycle to one of the nearby summits. The Roman Catholic church of Maria Schnee on the Hochalm is located at an altitude of 1,822 metres. Make the climb and you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view over Seckau and the Murtal. Built for alpine shepherds and dairymen, the church was consecrated in 1660. Another scenic option is the Steinplan, which can be easily reached on foot or by bike from several sides.

Enjoy some indoor racing

If the weather’s not on your side, why not try the indoor karting track in Spielberg? Channel your inner Pierre Gasly as you take to the state-of-the-art circuit. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned racer, you’ll enjoy the adrenaline-fuelled experience - racing friends or chasing your own best lap time.

Get behind the wheel

Prefer the virtual route? A replica Formula One car and simulator is available to try at a local automotive museum, offering you the chance to feel what it’s like to race an F1 machine. The simulator is housed at the charming VW Beetle Museum in Gaal, not far from Seckau. The museum features a collection of exhibits celebrating this iconic car model.

Spend time in Vienna

Most visitors to Austria fly in and out of the capital, Vienna, before making the 125-mile drive to Spielberg. Be sure to spend a night or two either side of your trip in this spectacular city. Nestled on the banks of the Danube, Vienna - former home to Mozart, Beethoven and Freud - is one of the most culturally inspiring cities in the world. Its rich history of art, music, and science is on display throughout the historic old town. In just a few hours, you can take in the Vienna State Opera House, the Imperial Crypt, Mozart’s Vienna residence, Roman ruins, and countless fascinating monuments lining the city’s streets and facades.

Don’t forget to order the Schnitzel

One of Austria’s most iconic dishes is schnitzel - a thin slice of meat, usually veal or pork, breaded and fried to crispy perfection. When in Vienna, be sure to visit Salm Bräu - a delightful spot with copper beer tanks in the corner and hearty plates of traditional schnitzel and lentil dishes. This popular bierhaus and microbrewery offers a warm, rustic atmosphere and an authentic taste of Austrian hospitality.
