Race Preview: Abu Dhabi GP

Abu Dhabi GP

BWT Alpine Formula One Team gears up for the final race of the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship season, the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto will drive the A525 competitively for the final time at the Yas Marina Circuit during the twilight race as the curtain closes on the current regulation era of Formula One.

The Yas Marina Circuit has hosted the Formula One season finale every year since 2014 with the sun setting on the racing season, literally, during the day-to-night contest. The venue has hosted dramatic title deciders, not least the 2010, 2016 and 2021 showdowns, with teams and drivers competing to end their year with the best possible result. The track, which snakes around Yas Island, was modified ahead of the 2021 race with Turn 9 reprofiled into a high-speed, banked corner.

Merci Viry!

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix marks the final race for Renault Power Units in Formula One. Almost continuously since 1977, the Viry-Châtillon facility has been building Formula One engines and from the outset has been one of the sport’s most innovative facilities.

At the 1979 French Grand Prix, Jean-Pierre Jabouille achieved Renault’s first win in the sport, which was the first with a turbocharged engine. This was the first of an impressive 178 Grand Prix victories, the most recent being Esteban Ocon’s win in Hungary, 2021.

In this time, they also achieved 507 podiums, 216 pole positions and 190 fastest laps. They have won 12 Constructors’ Championships and 11 Drivers’ Championships including Michael Schumacher and Benetton Formula’s triumph in 1995 and Fernando Alonso and Renault F1 Team’s in 2005 and 2006. Adding to the series of success in the 90s with Williams and an era of dominance with Red Bull Racing between 2010 and 2013.

Steve Nielsen:

“There is a bittersweet feeling as we draw this season to a close. It’s no secret that 2025 has dealt challenges to all of us but I have been incredibly impressed with how the whole team has responded to them. We arrive in Abu Dhabi after a race weekend which showcased our teamwork and motivation perfectly through our turnaround from Friday to Saturday. Our position in the Constructors’ Championship is clear but everyone back at base, in France and the UK, and trackside is still performing to the best of their ability and will continue to do so. This race weekend is an important one for many reasons, not least because it is our last contest with our own Viry-Châtillon produced Power Unit. I would like to personally express my thanks to everyone who has been a part of such a successful programme, through all its guises. We are aiming to put our best foot forward as we close out the season, and the era. Merci Viry!”

Pierre Gasly

“The Grand Prix in Qatar ended up a bit like our weekend in Las Vegas – we had a strong Qualifying in the top-10 but we were not able to secure a points finish through an unfortunate collision. Despite this, the motivation in the team is high. We demonstrated excellent improvement from Sprint Qualifying to Grand Prix Qualifying and unlocked a lot more from the car to get into Q3 for the tenth time this season. That is a great positive to take into the final race of the season, and this Formula One era, in Abu Dhabi. I will be watching from the garage for FP1 before getting back on track for the evening session, so I’ll need to dial in quickly. It’s a track we’ve raced well at in the past, particularly last season and we’re aiming to end the season with a positive result.”

Franco Colapinto:

“The race weekend in Qatar was not without its learnings. It was clear that the pace was there in the car, but we struggled to demonstrate that this weekend. There were mistakes made on my part throughout the weekend, but we showed more promise in the race. With similar conditions expected in Abu Dhabi this weekend we are ready for it, and we will look to capitalise on this potential. Yas Marina Circuit is a track I have visited a few times both in Formula One and my junior career. It is a good track, lots of different challenges and probably more possibility for overtaking. As we head into the final round, I am feeling very grateful to the team and all the incredible work they have put in this season, both at the track and the factories. Let’s end the year together on a high before a well-deserved break over winter.”
